Measure your space

Measure length × width or use the known floor area. Enter box coverage, a chosen extra allowance, and the price per box.

Split irregular rooms into rectangles and add their areas. Check whether the supplier lists coverage per plank or per box, and use the coverage per box when ordering boxes. Keep room area and package coverage in the same units.

Worked example

Example: a 16 × 12 ft floor is 192 sq ft. A chosen 10% extra allowance makes 211.2 sq ft. With 20 sq ft in each box, round up to 11 boxes. At an example price of $48 per box, the estimated cost is $528.

The formula

Estimated purchase cost = rounded-up box count × shelf price per box.

Before you buy

Use the coverage stated on the packaging. This is a quantity estimate, not an installation or cutting plan.

Round up after dividing the area including your chosen allowance by box coverage. Multiply by the price per box for material cost. Underlay, transitions, delivery, and labour are separate. Keep each room separate if the materials or box coverage differ.
