Flooring calculator: how many packs do I need?

Multiply the room length by its width, add an allowance for cuts and waste, then divide by the coverage printed on one pack. This calculator rounds the result up to full packs.

Area + full packs Room count, pack coverage, and waste allowance included. Calculate flooring

Estimate packaged flooring for rectangular rooms

Use the exact coverage shown on your laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood, or hardwood package. For differently sized rooms, calculate each one separately.

Use more than one only when every room has the same dimensions.

How the flooring estimate works

The calculator uses length × width × number of identical rooms to find the measured area. It adds the selected waste percentage, divides by the manufacturer's coverage per pack, and rounds up to the next complete pack.

The purchased coverage may be higher than the waste target because flooring is sold in whole packages. Keep unopened packs only when the retailer's return policy allows it, and retain matching boards for future repairs.

Before ordering flooring

  • Measure alcoves, closets, and connected areas separately
  • Confirm the exact coverage on the product package
  • Allow more waste for diagonal or patterned layouts
  • Calculate underlayment, trim, and transitions separately

Worked example

A 4 m × 5 m room has a measured area of 20 m². With 10% waste, the target becomes 22 m². If each pack covers 2.2 m², the estimate is exactly 10 full packs.
